PECULIARITIES IN MAREK VACCINATION

Poulvac CVI+HVT Marek vaccine like other frozen Marek vaccines is cell associated, meaning that it cannot survive alone outside the living cell like Lasota or Gumboro will. Because of this, some factors are very important to the survival of this vaccine virus and hence required for achieving successful vaccination of any flock.

  1. Diluent Quality

Diluent contains the nutrient nourishing the cells (chicken embryo fibroblast cell) which are housing the Marek vaccine viruses and is also very good for bacterial multiplication. The vaccine is always in a hibernating / freeze-dried form in their package from manufacturing. Diluent quality becomes an issue the moment the vaccine is reconstituted. Poor diluent quality means the cells housing the Marek vaccines will die off soon after reconstitution, hence only the first few hundred birds will receive the real vaccine in every reconstituted 1000/2000 doses vials. To avoid this type of disastrous event, always observe the following requirements.

  1. Stored at room temperature and protected from light.
  2. Observe the diluent bags for color changes

Yellow= Acidic, Bacterial growth DO NOT USE

Red= Neutral OKAY

Magenta= Alkaline                       DO NOT USE

  • Contamination

The process of reconstitution is a very critical one in Marek vaccine preparation. This procedure must be hygienic and aseptic as possible. Once a bacterial/yeast or any pathogen is introduced, the same nutrient meant for the cells will aid their rapid multiplication and eventual killing of the vaccine carrying cells. The use of hand gloves, nose masks, disinfected working surface and a clean environment is required for the reconstitution. A clean, closed and airtight room is required for reconstitution. All materials needed must be ready before starting reconstitution, no distractions, no delays, avoid phone calls.

Items for reconstitution

  1. Kits (18g needles and Syringes)
  2. Vaccine containers (liquid nitrogen can)
  3. Diluent quantity needed at room temperature
  4. Rule to measure liquid nitrogen level
  5. Water bath
  6. Timer
  7. Thermometer
  8. Waste bin
